Hajime is an Ace Trainer, formerly a member of Team Rocket. He does not talk about the latter and would prefer to pretend it never happened. He mostly hangs around in places like Victory Road, looking for only the strongest of opponents to battle. He won't challenge just anyone to a fight, but if you're brave enough to challenge him to a fight, he won't hold back. He's thought about trying to become a Gym Leader or even the Champion, but he'd prefer to seek out his own opponents without having to worry about the sorts of responsibilities that go along with that sort of thing.

His team consists of Scizor, Volcarona, Scolipede, Armaldo, Accelgor, and Kricketune. Scizor is his favored Pokemon to battle with, and no one's really sure why he's got the Kricketune. (It's not very good at fighting.) The Kricketune is not very bright and prone to popping out of his Pokeball at random times, chirping at inopportune moments, getting into things, and generally making a nuisance of itself.

It had been a long slog through Reversal Mountain, but Natalie was not to be discouraged. This was one of the last places that father had been spotted, or so went the most recent rumor that she had picked up. To turn back was impossible. Gym challengers could wait a little longer. But... but she and her Pokemon needed a break. It was an astonishingly hot day. So she found herself a shady spot in the shadow of a cliffside, popped Timmy the Purrloin and Sandoval the Pawniard from their Pokeballs, and cracked open a few bottles of fresh water.

"...huh?" What was that in the distance, though? In the tall grass, head and shoulders sticking out above it? A trainer? It had to be a trainer. Ugh, a trainer that probably wanted to battle? She took a long gulp of her water and averted her eyes. If she didn't make eye contact, maybe he wouldn't get any ideas... she didn't have time for that.

Too late, the Trainer in the tall grass was getting ideas. He stepped out of the tall grass and came into view, and he was lazily tossing a Pokeball up and down. "Looking for something?" There was a slight frown; should he know her? He'd done a bit of research on the gym leaders of these parts, but it hadn't been very recent or thorough. That was lucky for her; he would have been even more eager for a fight if he'd known she was a gym leader. "Like, say, a battle?"

Okay, so he was still pretty eager.

Natalie groaned and hung her head, rather than immediately acknowledging this new Trainer's challenge. This was exactly what she wasn't in the mood for. If the day were any less hot and she were any less tired, she might have declined and quietly excused herself, for discretion is the better part of valor (and she's a bit cowardly, if we're being honest), but... she was hot and miserable and his challenge just made her bristle, somehow.

"I wasn't looking for a battle..." She rises slowly to her feet, casting a glance to the left at her Purrloin and to the right at her Pawniard. "But if you want one, I can see what I can do."

Hajime's gaze flicks over the Purrloin and the Pawniard, and he nods to himself. "Two on two, then?" Without waiting for a response, he tosses out a Pokeball. His Scolipede bursts out, rears to its full height, and puts on a fairly good show of being an intimidating monster.

Before he can toss out a second, one of the balls on his belt bursts open, and a Kricketune pops out. It's noisily chirping and posing and generally being goofy and everything the Scolipede is not.
