Test Drive Meme - Autumn 2017

TEST DRIVE MEME
I. A Mad Tea Party
You awaken to a new message from Zephyr at your bedside informing you that for today only, they're giving the Meadous a little makeover. That makeover would seem to be one that has transformed the Meadous into a Wonderland of sorts. There are sweets on the table that inform you to "eat me" and that will turn you small or increase your size, depending on what you eat. And down in that smaller world, there are all sorts of creatures, like talking flowers. There are also people much larger or much smaller than you now. Maybe you want to crouch down and say hello when you're bigger? Or shout a warning not to crush you while they're walking when you're smaller.

II. Be Careful What You Wish For
Well, that... that wasn't quite to plan. You stare down at the crayon drawing from Zephyr showing you exactly what you wished for. Except you hadn't meant it literally. Or you hadn't meant it quite like that, even if your wording had been vague. Now you're stuck with something you didn't want. Or perhaps you made a big mistake and now you're a different species. Or have extra appendages you can't get rid of. Not without making the walk of shame back to the Wishing Pond to wish away the changes. Why this? Why?

Hopefully, no one will catch you as you steal forth to undo your mistake.

III. Intrepid Explorers
You've found some fantastic ruins in the jungle and delved in (perhaps unwisely) on your own, only to find that these ruins contain not only treasure, but traps. You might find yourself swept up in a net and suddenly dangling from the ceiling. Or you might be on the receiving end of a poisoned dart that's making you hallucinate all sorts of creatures, friend and foe, alike. Or you might have even been smacked against a wall by a well-timed hammer and dazed.

It's not life-threatening, whatever situation you're in. But you might start hoping that someone else wanders into this place soon to help out.

IV. Bulletin Board
Each month, Zephyr clears away most of the notes from their Bulletin Board and adjusts the decorations, leaving it fresh and open for anyone who might wish to post something new. The Meadous is a fairly rural place with minimal technology. Those used to a network may find the Bulletin Board is the closest they can come to something like that again. Who wants to actually talk to the neighbors when you can post a passive aggressive note about someone making a racket at 2 AM, instead? There's also some measure of anonymity afforded. Just be sure to only post up your notes when no one else is around and can catch you at it.

V. Choose Your Own Adventure
Whether it's just waking up in the Meadous or exploring some other part of the Setting, you're striking out with your own prompts to get some action started.

Ales, being the smaller of the two, was able to stay hidden while following her and watched she rushed forward like an idiot and got herself tangled up. It took a lot not to laugh, though he covered his mouth and snickered as she fruitlessly flailed around. It was about time that something made him happy.

"Must be quiet boring for you, hm?" He stepped into hallway, arms folded behind his back and keeping watch for potential antics. "But thank you for clearing this room up for tiny old me. Toodles!"

If he found some kind of knife, he'd come back to free her, he promised himself. There was no need to rush.

He must not've been doing a whole lot of snickering, because Tabris hadn't done a whole lot of flailing around. Like she's going to put on a show for the Capitol.

Still quite sure that this is some new arena she's been forced in, she turns to see what kind of Tribute she had to face now. But whoever she was expecting to be waltzing in, it certainly wasn't...whatever the hell that thing was. It takes a few moments for her to even speak--but she's quite clear on her feelings, once she does.

"Maker's ass, you're a weird looking fucker. Are you a mutt? Or an offworlder?" It's hard imagine why the Capitol would go around making some bizarre talking animal....thing, but she can't understand why they like sticking her in murder arenas, either.

There's an annoyed frown on her face, but she doesn't seem particularly surprised that he isn't being helpful, nor eager to convince him otherwise. Far more likely in her expectations is attempted murder, and the best that she can really hope for is that he has to get her down before trying to kill her.

The expected reaction from here was confusion over his species, the usual way humans greeted him on Crystallis. As he passed beneath her net, he shouted at the space before him: "Teensie!"

He promptly stepped on a raised block, a poison dart flew out from a slot on the wall and struck his hat, knocking it onto the floor.

Tabris watches him with a detached interest, though the poison dart earns a loud laugh. Not sure what the 'Teensie' bit was about, though. Is that his name? It fit him well enough, she supposed.

"Yeah, watch out for that. It'd be pretty embarrassing to have me right here, and still die before me, just 'cause you got a dart upside the head. Just imagine how that'll look on the playbacks." At this point, she's assuming he's another tribute. He can speak like one, at least.

Ales squeaks, frozen from the near-death experience. It takes him a few seconds after Tabris spoke to return to the real world and run over to his hat. As he grabs the brim, he fumbles and the hat tumbles away from his fingers down the hall. He runs after it again, panicked fingers continuing to accidentally toss it farther and farther away. Eventually, he reaches the end and returns it to his head.

"Yes, it would be if it had been set two feet lower. They aren't expecting creatures like me, those idiots." Playbacks. As if there were people watching and laughing at their misery. Good joke. He steps across the threshold to the next room.

A floor panel twice his size swings open, and he's gripping the edges of the stone wall. It's a losing battle as he ever slowly slips downward.

It...is kind of weird that the gamemakers hadn't anticipated his height and corrected the traps to make sure that they'd effect everyone. Maybe it was just easier to make them all the right height for standard sizes? Who knows.

Tabris continues her indifferent observation of Ales' progress, though she looks rather amused when he manages to almost fall through another floor panel. Rookie. She shifts around in the net to get a better view, craning her head.

"Shit, that doesn't look good." Tabris informs him, helpfully. "Too bad there's no one around who can give you a hand. I'd help, but. You know." She gestures to the net around her. "Stuck here. Which is, ironically, still a better predicament than yours. But who knows? Maybe it won't kill you. Maybe the gamemakers put a big ballpit under there."

"ballpit in the void" was an actual meta gag from his game

"Why don't--" Ales starts, but his fingers looses for a second too long. He plummets into the pit, screaming.

It cuts off quickly when he hits the leaf-covered ground and all the air leaves his lunch.

"Thanks a lot!"
