Not as bad as before I met Sherlock. But close to it. I'm not really sure I can explain it another way. I mean, if I knew you before Norfinbury and before something else happened at home, I probably would've jumped right in at the chance. I'd still want a relationship, though. Even a... week-long holiday sort of relationship. Sex is better when it's someone you care about.

And yeah, okay. A shag might be nice, but if there's nothing there or I'm worried about the person stabbing me in the neck midway through, what's the point?

[She really wants to ask what it was that happened... but yeah, that might be prying a little too much, even though the books give her idea of what it could have been.]

Just liking someone isn't enough, then?

And please, if I wanted to stab you I would have done it already.

It's more complicated than that. [John's sighing now.] If I don't have a particular reason to distrust them, yeah, maybe it'd be enough.

It's entirely comforting, I obviously would rather not see you die.

No. There are a few people I'm not like that with. Major Sholto, Mrs. Hudson, Greg--DI Greg Lestrade. I wouldn't really call it paranoia with Sherlock, either, when he might knock me out with drugs in my tea for a few hours. Or light my dresser on fire. Or whatever the hell is in his head for an experiment.

[He waves a hand both to end that thought and avoid having to find a response to her second comment. 'Thanks' seems trite.]

Not that I recognize either of those names. For all I know they're cheating somehow.

Bucky's not the most sociable bloke. I'm surprised you haven't met him wandering out in the forest, though. Fiona was in Norfinbury. She was the first friend I made there. [His expression tightens.] She was worried about getting back to her sister and didn't want any romantic attachments to distract her from him. That's all we were, just friends. But I...

[He'd fallen in love with a woman in the space of months.]

You might've liked her. She was a con artist. Clever, funny, wouldn't put up with any nonsense from people. Least of all me.

I don't really care about people I will probably never meet. Getting attached to people who will just disappear is unhealthy.

Yeah. That's him.

I'd appreciate it if you didn't ask anything else about my relationship with him. I've made promises to him about things I won't say. I don't want to break those.

He's a good man. He's been through a hell of a lot worse than I have and come out still sane. That's something.

Yes, but humans don't know that when they see us. Sherlock is just brilliant for having figured it out so quickly.
